On the trip across to Great Barrier Island I saw this ship on the horizon before going below, leaving Matthew on look out, came back 10 minutes later and this ship was less then 1/2 km away bearing right down on us. We had the right of way, well sort of, the ship probably had right of way by sheer mass. It was coming at us so fast I hestitated as to which was the best path to get out of its way, as if the ship changed course at the same time I changed course, in the wrong direction, we would really be in the poo. Fortunatetly the ship turned a few degrees to starboard to avoid us.
